Avis Rudner, River Forest Township General Assistance Administrator
Need help? You can turn to your township for a variety of services, including:
Residents in financial need who are not eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or
other government-sponsored assistance, and who meet income and asset guidelines, must apply for General Assistance.
In exchange for benefits, you may apply for work in a community service program. Residents call 708.771.6159, ext 270 or Contact Us.
We provide information about the community food pantry, Beyond Hunger, and referrals to the Holiday Food and Gift Basket program operated by the Community of Congregations. Over 60? Be sure to check out our Senior Services Food Program.
Links to Health Care
If you are a low-wage or part-time worker, the Township may be able to help you and your family find health care assistance. Access to Care assists with doctor's bills and prescription costs for individuals who are not covered by insurance, Medicare or Medicaid.
The Townships loan out medical equipment such as wheelchairs, canes, walkers and shower chairs free of charge for as long as the equipment is needed. We also invite donations of gently used medical equipment.
Services to Citizens with Disabilities
In addition to services available to all township residents, we offer some special services for citizens with temporary or permanent disabilities. These include transportation, meal delivery, temporary handicapped parking cards, RTA reduced fare cards, cab coupons, home energy assistance, property tax/rent rebate, pharmacy benefits and daily phone calls to check on a resident's well being.
A Center for Information and Referrals
